Scottish businesses urged to improve safety standards

Scottish businesses urged to improve safety standards Scottish businesses are being urged to "get their house in order" by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and reduce the number of work-related trips, slips and falls.

According to recent government statistics, slips, trips and falls cost the Scottish economy almost £73 million during 2006.

The HSE is now urging businesses to take "simple" cost-effective steps in order to reduce risks, such as increasing the use of personal protective equipment and clothing, removing obstacles and ensuring that spillages are cleaned up.

A statement released by the executive said: "Everyone should be encouraged to use their initiative and suggest ways of preventing slips and trips and falls, clear up spillages, keep work areas clear of obstacles and wear sensible footwear."

The HSE says business owners can help to raise awareness by using the health and safety posters available on its website to inform staff about potential risks.
