Scottish farm fined over safety failings A Scottish farm has been handed a substantial fine after a 13-year-old boy died when he fell through the roof of a building.

The accident occurred when the boy was raised up to the roof in a tractor bucket by his stepfather and fell 13ft through a skylight.

Appearing at Elgin Sheriff Court, the firm pleaded guilty to breaching various safety laws, which lead to the incident in August 2006.

As a result, the farm has been fined 13,500 by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

"Farmers and those working in agriculture frequently carry out roof work, yet fail to appreciate the risks involved are always substantial," HSE inspector Ann Poyner warned.

She added: "If possible, avoid going on fragile roofs and always keep children clear of high-risk activities."

To reduce the risk of such accidents, agriculture workers are also advised to use appropriate workwear.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800043879-ADNFCR
