Site chosen for flood barrier Safety gloves may be needed at a new flood barrier project at Boston in Lincolnshire.

It will involve the construction of a structure similar to the Thames Flood Barrier in east London, with the structure preventing tidal surges on the River Witham from inundating the town.

The Environment Agency said the move would reduce the chance of the town being flooded to one in 300, while northern area manager Andy Baxendale said there will be other benefits as well.

"It will also provide opportunities to regenerate Boston's waterways and will help achieve a significant milestone for the Fens Waterways Link vision to connect the cathedral cities of Lincoln, Ely and Peterborough," he stated.

The specific location chosen is a point slightly downstream of Black Sluice Lock.

London's barrier was constructed in 1982 and spans 520 metres across the Thames near Woolwich, with its ten steel gates protecting 125 miles of the capital from tidal surges.
