Staff 'must have decent facilities to wash hands'

Staff 'must have decent facilities to wash hands' Business owners in the food manufacturing sector have been reminded of the importance of washing hands after one firm was fined for not giving staff a hygienic place to work.

A window manufacturer was prosecuted after Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors found no improvement to staff facilities following two Improvement Notices.

Employees had to use toilets that were in a poor state of repair, with washrooms dirty and undersupplied in terms of soap and hand-driers.

An area where staff ate did not have appropriate equipment and contained dust and debris from an adjacent workshop.

HSE inspector Clare Hawkes commented: "The law requires employers to provide a minimum basic standard of clean and hygienic welfare facilities for workers. There's no excuse for not providing them.

"Failure to provide decent facilities or to comply with enforcement notices are serious matters. [The company] showed complete disregard for the welfare of its employees and for the law," she added.

It is extremely important for workers in the food manufacturing sector to wash their hands thoroughly to avoid passing on food-borne diseases.

Safety gloves are advised for such employees.
