Staff need to be trained to use equipment, says HSE

Staff need to be trained to use equipment, says HSE The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has highlighted the need to ensure that staff are property trained in the use of workplace equipment.

It noted that failure to train employees in how to use machinery and safety gear - such as dumper trucks and hi vis clothing - could result in serious accidents.

Joanna Woodcock, HSE inspector, warned that inadequate staff training could lead to dangerous incidents.

She said this is particularly true when workers need to operate large machines on construction sites.

"Dumper trucks are the most dangerous items of plant on construction sites, with overturns resulting in more deaths and serious injuries than any other site vehicle," Ms Woodcock noted.

Companies might be able to help avoid incidents involving pedestrians by providing all members of staff on construction sites with hi vis clothing.

This comes after the HSE urged tradesmen to ensure that they properly assess the dangers of each job before starting work. ADNFCR-1200-ID-19084344-ADNFCR
