Suitable workwear 'is crucial' says HSE The importance of providing staff with workwear and safety gear has been highlighted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

It reminded bosses that they have a responsibility to provide the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure that it is used on a day-to-day basis.

Andrea Jones, HSE inspector, commented: "Just providing personal protective equipment to employees is not enough - employers must ensure it is worn through adequate training, monitoring and supervision."

She said that for dangerous tasks, such as those involving molten substances, written procedures need to be in place.

These should tell workers what equipment to use, such as safety gloves or visors.

HSE guidelines on adhering to the PPE at Work Regulations 1992 state that employees should be given boiler suits or other appropriate workwear when there is a risk of chemical or metal splashes.
