TUC campaigns for 48-hour week
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) is campaigning for a 48-hour limit to be imposed on the working week.

It wants the UK to sign up to the European directive to limit working hours in a bid to improve health and safety, reports the Press Association.

Signing up to the Working Time Directive would help to relieve some of the pressure put on "hard pressed" staff, according to the TUC.

TUC officials claim that workers in the UK put in the longest hours in Europe, with one in eight people regularly working more than 48-hours each week.

If the limit was put in place, the first to benefit would be the 460,000 people who work longer than 60 hours every seven days.

The body warned that such a heavy workload could be dangerous to staff and those around them.

Companies could minimise the chance of accidents by providing employees with personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety gloves and hi vis clothing.

Failure to do this could mean that firms are in breach of the PPE at Work Regulations 1992, which might result in a fine.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18931603-ADNFCR
