TUC head demands stricter PPE enforcement There is a need for increased enforcement regarding personal protective equipment use and other rules and regulations governing health and safety, a Trades Union Congress (TUC) boss has said.

Brendan Barber, general secretary of the federation, made the call at a conference about safety enforcement and the role of directors in relation to it, Personneltoday.com reported.

"Nobody knows exactly how many people die prematurely every year as a result of work, but [it] is certainly well over 20,000 a year - and every single one of these deaths was avoidable," he explained.

Later in his speech, Barber dubbed the number of a preventable deaths "a crime wave".

It is the job of the Health & Safety Executive to enforce regulations relating to safety clothing and other safety issues and several businesses are prosecuted every year for being in breach of rules.

The Health & Safety Commission, according to Mr Barber, recently said that the number of avoidable deaths in the workplace was unacceptable.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18364815-ADNFCR
