Trainee staff 'should be adequately supervised when using work equipment'

Trainee staff 'should be adequately supervised when using work equipment' Trainee workers who are getting used to new machinery need to be supervised adequately and be properly trained in its usage, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has said.

The warning comes after a young employee at a meat processing company in Brighton received severe injuries to his arm while using a mincer.

Magistrates heard that the 16-year-old trainee had been left working alone in a meat processing room when a blockage jammed the mincing machine.

The staff member used his left arm to remove the blockage but became trapped inside the equipment.

HSE inspector Graham Goodenough commented: "This incident was completely avoidable and has left a young man with permanent injuries.

"The level of supervision [the company] offered in this instance was unacceptable and the company could have taken simple measures to prevent unsupervised use of the mincing machine by this trainee," he added.

Safety signs could be used by employers to remind workers how to safely use equipment.
