Transport company fined after forklift accident A southern transport company has been fined after an employee was seriously injured in a forklift accident due to blind spots created by the machinery, inadequate lighting and insufficiently trained drivers.

Despite the appropriate workwear and adequate personal protective equipment being worn, it was ruled that there was insufficient lighting in the workplace and inadequate maintenance on the forklifts involved, according to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

As well as the appropriate workwear, employers should ensure that dangerous areas are fitted with safety signs.

The HSE also emphasised the need to ensure that areas with poor visibility were well lit.

Ray Kelly, the HSE prosecuting inspector, said: "This case illustrated starkly how easily normal work places can become accident scenes when health and safety management systems breakdown."

Recent research has found that up to two-thirds of accidents in the workplace are caused by insufficient lighting, reports Manufacturingtalk.
