Transport firms urged to consider safety

Transport firms urged to consider safety Transport firms are being targeted in a Health and Safety Executive (HSE) campaign to promote moving goods safety.

From next month the HSE will hold a number of events in Newport, offering health and safety guidance to haulage and distribution companies.

HSE principal inspector Michael Thomas commented: "Transport related incidents account for around 2,500 major injuries each year, which has a financial cost to businesses in terms of lost working days, and penalties through enforcement action."

He claims firms must take measures to protect workers and focus on three main principles - "safe site, safe driver and safe vehicles".

The events will also include a number of practical demonstrations such as safe forklift driving and information on racking in warehouses and new developments in the areas of safety technology and personal protective equipment.

Workers are advised by the government to ensure they are using the correct handling equipment before attempting to move goods.

Lifting equipment should be CE-marked and fit for purpose, according to the HSE.
