Transport operators warned to 'be seen' The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has warned firms about the dangers of poorly managed transport in the workplace.

It reminded employers that large vehicles, notably earth-moving machines, often have "poor visual fields".

Norrie Buchanan, HSE inspector, commented: "It is crucial that additional steps are taken to ensure that the drivers of these dump trucks are aware of other smaller vehicles around them."

She added that control measures such as cameras on the sides of trucks and other methods of improving visibility, both of smaller vehicles and larger ones, were available at "minimal cost".

Employers looking to ensure the safety of workers in places with vehicles may wish to provide suitable hi vis clothing and erect safety signs warning drivers and pedestrians of hazardous zones.

Section three of the Health and Safety in the Workplace Act 1974 states that employers must ensure "as far as reasonably practicable" that workers are not exposed to risks to their health or safety.
