Transporting equipment 'must be up to the job'

Transporting equipment 'must be up to the job' Equipment used to transport heavy materials must be up to the job in order to prevent avoidable injuries to employees, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has reminded business owners.

The warning comes after a haulage partnership was fined £8,000 for health and safety breaches after an HSE investigation revealed a trailer used to move waste chipboard was in a poor state of repair.

It also found the chipboard had been placed in an unstable arrangement, which could have been dangerous to nearby workers.

HSE inspector Karen Moran commented: "Moving wood around the site was part of the company's regular work, so they should have ensured that the equipment they were using was safe. The trailer that was used was in such a poor condition that it was not suitable for this task.

"[The company] failed in its legal duty to ensure that clear hazards such as this are identified and measures put in place to manage the risk. This includes making sure that equipment is maintained in a condition to carry out the work safely and that workers are trained in the correct procedures," she added.

Firms could invest in high vis clothing for their employees.
