Union pledges to fight for health and safety rights at work Today (April 28th) marks International Workers Memorial Day, when employees around the world who have died in the course of their employment are remembered by their colleagues.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) has marked the day by pledging to "fight and fight again" to protect staff from health and safety breaches in their line of work.

General secretary Billy Hayes commented: "Every year, on this day, workers all over the world pause to remember their colleagues who have died in the course of their duties.

"We in the trade union movement are very proud of our health and safety culture and this will always be a priority," he noted.

Mr Hayes pointed out that while the perception of health and safety at work remains to be seen as "political correctness gone mad", or a burden on small businesses, "our best tribute to those who have lost their lives at work is to reject these attacks".

In order to reduce the likelihood of accidents at work, employers could invest in safety gear such as appropriate workwear.
