University praised for hygiene training The University of York has been praised by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) for its new Cleaning School initiative.

The new scheme teaches the university's domestic staff how to "clean effectively" and outlines the personal protective equipment and clothing required to prevent work-place accidents.

Cleaners partaking in the scheme will all gain British Institute of Cleaning Sciences qualifications, which they will be able to use when seeking employment in the future.

Praising the scheme, health and safety inspector Julian Franklin said: "We would like to commend the university for setting up the Cleaning Science Training School. Slips and trips in the workplace can have very serious consequences for the individual concerned, as well as their employer and we're delighted that the university is at the forefront of training its staff."

According to government figures, trips, slips and falls cost employers around £512 million annually.
