Vehicle repair companies warned by HSE Companies involved in vehicle repair are being warned by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) of the dangers of working under vehicles after a firm was fined following the death of an employee.

The Warwick-based manufacturer was ordered to pay over £188,000 after the engineer was killed when the parking brake released on the vehicle on which he was working.

An HSE investigation found that his employers had not conducted adequate risk assessment and had failed to provide him with wheel chocks, which meant he had to use bricks as an alternative.

HSE inspector Lyn Spooner commented: "In the absence of suitable safe systems of work to provide adequate instruction and in the absence of the provision of adequate equipment, [he] was forced to improvise."

Regulation four of the Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 states that employers are responsible for providing workers with suitable equipment except for where the risk has been suitably controlled by other means.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18683079-ADNFCR
