Wakefield tradesmen warned of the dangers of asbestos Tradesmen in Wakefield have been warned about the dangers of asbestos by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The body joined forces with home improvement retailer Homebase to reduce the rising death rate as a result of asbestos-related illnesses.

Figures released by the HSE revealed that 20 tradesmen die each year as a result of the toxic substance.

It said that this figure is set to rise, adding that 155 people in Wakefield died from mesothelioma between 1981 and 2005.

Gill Spurrier, HSE's head of operations for Yorkshire and Humber, said: "Research shows that many workers, particularly tradesmen, think that they are not personally at risk of exposure to asbestos and the diseases it can cause."

Firms with employees who might be exposed to asbestos should provide them with suitable workwear.

The Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992 require companies to train staff in the use and maintenance of safety clothing.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18938965-ADNFCR
