Warning issued to Ireland's agricultural sector The rise in deaths in Ireland's agricultural sector has prompted a government minister to warn farmers to take more time to think about the risks associated with each task they undertake.

Billy Kelleher, labour affairs minister, asserted that many of the deaths or injuries sustained on farms were preventable incidents and he urged workers to be careful during the busier harvest season, reports the Press Association.

He commented: "By simply taking five minutes to think about the risks involved before starting any task, you can take preventative measures to lessen the likelihood of an accident or worse."

Mr Kelleher acknowledged that there was a temptation to cut corners to save time but emphasised that safety should never be compromised, stating that it was not worth the risk.

In related news, the Tyrone Times recently reported that the death of a farmer whose clothing was caught in some machinery prompted Health and Safety Executive inspectors to warn workers to use appropriate workwear when conducting maintenance on vehicles.
