Waste collectors warned after fatal accident

Waste collectors warned after fatal accident Companies that are responsible for waste collection have been urged to consider the safety of their employees.

East Dunbartonshire Council was this week fined for an accident in which a kerbside worker was struck and killed by a reversing waste recycling lorry last year.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has flagged up the case as an example of how companies should ensure that drivers are fully trained to manoeuvre a vehicle safely.

Jean Edgar, an inspector at the watchdog, commented: "A safe system of work should be drawn up setting out how communication and control between kerbside collectors and the driver can be reliably achieved."

She added that a "simple mistake" can have "tragic consequences" for this "important" group of workers.

This comes after the HSE found that injury rates in the waste and recycling industry have declined slightly in the last five years.
