West Yorkshire firms urged to improve health and safety record Businesses in West Yorkshire have been urged to redouble their efforts this year to prevent accidents in the workplace.

According to new figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there were 5,693 incidents in the country during the 2008-09 period, representing 109 cases per week.

This figure is comprised of eight deaths, which was three higher than in 2007-08, while 119 Yorkshire firms were prosecuted by the HSE last year for health and safety breaches.

"Behind these statistics are real life stories of people and families dealing with hardship, pain and suffering," HSE regional director David Snowball told the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"We should pause to reflect as a new year arrives on the number of incidents in the past 12 months and what we can do to stop the pattern repeating. Many injuries are entirely preventable."

The HSE also revealed that there were 1,205 major injuries and a further 4,480 injuries which required more than three days' absence, both of which were improvements on the 2007-08 statistics.

Last week, the HSE announced that there were more serious or fatal work-related incidents in London during 2008-09 than in Scotland and Wales combined.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19541025-ADNFCR
