Work-related back injuries 'a major risk'

Work-related back injuries 'a major risk' Employers have been reminded of the need for proper health and safety provisions in the workplace to reduce the danger of back damage to workers.

A report by the Institution of Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH) has warned of the risk posed by musculoskeletal injuries present in labour industries such as agriculture and construction for workers responsible for lifting heavy objects.

The international safety body has emphasised the necessity of educating workers on appropriate lifting technique, as well as the need for proper planning and provision for potentially dangerous lifting activities.

Nattasha Freeman, president of IOSH, said: "A bad back doesn't discriminate … the one thing these ailments do guarantee is considerable pain and suffering for the victim, which is, in some cases, lifelong."

Among the measures recommended by the Health and Safety Executive for reducing risk when lifting is the use of appropriate workwear, such as high-friction safety gloves to increase grip on awkward loads.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19226167-ADNFCR
