Work-related falls cost Devon millions Work-related falls cost the Devon economy around £13.7 million per year, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has revealed today.

Principal safety inspector Rob Pearce is urging businesses in the area to improve health and safety standards and "get their house in order".

The HSE is targeting Devon as part of its Shattered Lives Campaign, aimed at reducing the number of trips, slips and falls in the workplace, 50 per cent of which are caused by "bad housekeeping".

Businesses are advised that cleaning is a "simple" and cost-effective way to reduce accidents.

"What employers need to do is ensure that there is an effective cleaning regime in place and pedestrians can't get access to wet floors," the HSE explained today.

Workplace accidents in Cornwall are also of concern to the government, with trips, slip and falls costing Cornish businesses £6 million during 2007.
