Work equipment 'must be properly maintained'

Work equipment 'must be properly maintained' The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has sent a strong reminder to businesses in the food preparation sector to ensure their work equipment is properly maintained at all times.

Its warning comes after a worker in a London bakery sustained serious injuries to his fingers while attempting to clear a blockage in a bladed machine.

HSE inspectors found that the bread making company was aware that there was a fault inside the machine but did not take adequate steps to prevent the 26-year-old employee from using the equipment.

Jack Wilby, an HSE inspector, commented: "Work equipment must be maintained in an efficient state and in good working order.

"This is another unfortunate reminder to employers, that you have a duty to maintain your work equipment. Failure to do so can result in serious personal injury as we have witnessed with this young man," he added.

Businesses in the food manufacturing sector could purchase safety gloves for their employees to wear while they are operating similar equipment.
