Workers 'do not realise PPE is necessary'

Workers 'do not realise PPE is necessary' Over 50 per cent of workers do not understand the need to use personal protective equipment (PPE) when conducting certain tasks, according to a poll of safety professionals.

The survey also found that almost half of the specialists asked had witnessed staff failing to use the appropriate PPE, while around 37.5 per cent said it happened occasionally, reports the Press Association.

Many of the experts asked attributed this to uncomfortable or unattractive equipment.

Brian Davis of Kimberley-Clark, the company who organised the poll, stated: "[Our survey found] too many workers just don't protect themselves properly when performing hazardous tasks."

Almost three-quarters of the experts stated that they would like to see more comfortable workwear and PPE provided for employees.

Guidelines published by the Health and Safety executive recommend that employers check that equipment can be adjusted to fit members of staff properly and that it is appropriate to the job.
