Workers demand proper safety equipment

Workers demand proper safety equipment Clean-up workers in Barbados are calling on their employers to give them the correct safety equipment and clothing required in order to ensure their health and wellbeing.

Employees from the Maurice Byer Polyclinic told Weekend Nation they had to clear a house full of debris without basic safety items such as overalls, boots and gloves.

"We should have a backhoe, Bobcat and a sanitation truck. We are employed under the Ministry of Health, but no one is looking after our health. This is not fair," a spokesman said.

"We should not have to work without the right clothing and equipment."

The worker's pleas may serve as a reminder to UK businesses that protective clothing is a necessity when removing waste.

According to the British Health & Safety Executive, fatalities in the waste industry are ten times the national average, with the majority of accidents caused by poor manual handling technique.ADNFCR-1200-ID-18470123-ADNFCR
