Working at height precautions are vital

Working at height precautions are vital Health and safety policies relating to staff working at height need to be implemented, otherwise companies could find themselves on the receiving end of a prohibition notice.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently issued such a reprimand to a roofing company after an inspector found workers were being put at risk of falling off a three-storey building.

A notice was put in place to cease work immediately until safety barriers could be put up to stop potential falls from the eight-metre high roof.

However, when the HSE returned, the firm had not invested in suitable equipment or precautions against falls.

HSE inspector Simon Breen commented: "Falls from height are the single biggest cause of fatalities in the construction industry. [The company] had no excuse in this instance - they knew how to ensure the safety of their workers but decided to not to.

Safety helmets could be worn to prevent head injuries while working at height.ADNFCR-1200-ID-800490495-ADNFCR
