Workplace stress linked to heart disease in women

Workplace stress linked to heart disease in women The risk of heart disease is boosted in women with high-pressure jobs, new research shows.

A study which appears in Occupational and Environmental Medicine assessed the impact of work on the heart health of 12,116 Danish female nurses.

Researchers found that those nurses who suggested the pressure placed on them at work was much too high when quizzed in 1993 were 50 per cent more likely to have ischaemic heart disease 15 years later compared to those who said their work load was manageable.

While this figure falls to 35 per cent when heart disease risk factors are taken into account, the results are still described as significant.

This goes against previous research which found that the existence of a link between workplace stress and heart disease was largely confined to men.

According to the British Heart Foundation, stress is not a direct risk factor for cardiovascular disease.

However, the risk of cardiovascular disease is heightened when a person turns to smoking, eating or drinking as a way of compensating for increased stress levels.ADNFCR-1200-ID-19763804-ADNFCR
