Hearing Protection: From Ear Plugs to Communication Equipment
You must protect against dangerous noise.
The Noise at Work Regulations, 1989, require that any persons working in noise levels between 85 dBA and 90 dBA must be provided with suitable hearing protection on request. If noise levels are above 90 dBA then hearing protection must be supplied and worn. New European legislation to become law in the U.K in feb 2006, reduces these levels to 80dB and 85dB. The new regulations also incorporate other changes including a "maximum exposure limit" value of 87dB.
Arco offer a wide choice of quality Hearing Protection products. From ear plugs and muffs, to communication equipment for your workforce, as well as a comprehensive range of noise meters for Safety Officers and Environmental Officers. To help everyone choose the products most suitable for them we feature, as appropriate, an attenuation selection chart for ease of reference.
Noise is an unpleasant, aggravating and debilitating problem. Damage to the tiny sensory hair cells in the inner ear is irreversible. Personal hearing loss can lead to expensive compensation claims being lodged against employers.
In the Arco catalogue we show three sets of attenuation figures to be used to choose the right Hearing Protection. The standard octave band system. The HML method. HML gives a comparable accuracy to the octave band system, yet is very straightforward in practice. HML refer to the noise reduction of the chosen hearing protector at High, Medium and Low frequencies.
The Single Number Rating Method is a single measurement of sound pressure level (noise). Excellent as a quick easy guide but only as a general check of the total noise frequency range.
